Living in London is expensive. I'm sure I've discussed this before, by mentioning cheap/free things. Today, (or, Saturday as the case may be...) we decided to avail ourselves of some more of these free things. Nothing like getting out and about, and seeing the city you live in.
So we hopped onto a tube, jumped off at Green Park, and then wandered through a delightfully green and sunny park, past the deck chairs that you could hire for £1.50 an hour. We decided not to do this, and continued on our merry way, towards the gilded gates at the other end of the Park. Can you guess where we were headed by now?
Today's presentation of the Largest Free Musical in the world, commenced at 11:00am. We arrived at about 10, and still had trouble getting up to the fence, to be able to see anything. We saw policemen with automatic weapons, and a big, imposing ediface. I have to say though, for one of the homes of the most financially-secure dole bludger in the western world, it's not a particularly attractive building. (I'm obviously not a monarchist)
Yes. We saw the changing of the Guard. And you know what.. If you have the time, it's something you have to see, just to say you've seen it. Overall though, I felt like it was just a massively choreographed dance routine, that exists solely for historical and show-off purposes, rather than any real need any more. Still - obviously very very popular, on a bright, sunny Saturday morning.
We then headed off down the tube to Canary Wharf, and onto the DLR down to Greenwich.
Greenwich is kind of like a little sea-side town, and we both enjoyed the markets, before wandering along the water front for a bit, and up through the colleges, and the big hill to the Royal Observatory. This was also free, and gave us a chance to jump backwards through time, as it's also where the Prime Meridian is. Overall, it was probably worth a little more than we paid (£0.00) and if it was quieter, we'd have had more of an opportunity to go through the exhibits and learn stuff. The Octagonal Room was awesome though.
all that done, we jumped back on the DLR, then the Tube, and came home. Total expense for the day was £6.60 each for Oyster cards...
