Last time, it didn't bother us so much - we weren't getting round so much. But today was the next in a series of strikes orchestrated by London Underground employees. If you're not aware, London Underground runs what is colloquially known as the Tube, moving more than 1 billion people a year. It's a vast network, with heaps of interconnecting lines, so you can almost _always_ find a way to get where you're going.
Anyway, this week, Rhiannon had to work in the city, meaning we can catch the Tube together, which is fun :) Until the union workers strike, throwing the entire transit system, and likely the city, into disarray
Normally, we'd catch the Jubilee line to Finchley Rd, jump off and onto the Metropolitan line (thereby decreasing journey time by about 5-6 minutes and avoiding the need to change at the sprawling station that is Baker St.) and take it down past Kings Cross and get off at Farringdon. Takes about 30 minutes, give or take if connection times work out.
Nope. Today, we couldn't do that. We could get to Baker St, but then there was NO way to get across to the eastern regions on trains. So instead, being the seasoned and experienced Londoners we are, jumped off at West Hampsted and got onto the National Rail, which went down to Kings Cross, and thence Farringdon. Only 15 minutes from West Hampstead, which is kinda cool - even if it took us 10 minutes from our door here to there.
Rhiannon though, got owned. Having to get off at Kings Cross and find a bus over to the Liverpool St region took an hour to get onto a bus, and a 30 minute trip, meaning she was an hour late. These things, we take in our stride. It's all part of becoming a Tried and True Londoner.
Getting home was a similar challenge - we caught a Hammnersmith & City to Baker St, intending to change to Jubilee, but it was closed at Baker St. So instead of being clever and catching a Metropolitan (which we couldn't get at Farringdon) to Finchley Rd and changing, we caught a Bakerloo to Queens Park, and caught a bus home
All up, we've been travelling for almost 4 hours. Unless of course we add both our journeys up.
Tonight was a fuckaround, but didn't really take any longer. At least we have weekly passes, so we didn't have to pay continual changing fees.
