In Bruge

Bruge has been referred to as the Venice of the north, due to it’s plethora of canals, and the buildings that are right on the edge of the water.
I don’t really agree. Sure, it’s got plenty of canals, and plenty of buildings right on the edge, but it’s not like Venice.

It feels much cleaner, wider, and more open. There’s more greenery. It’s not surrounded by water, and built on water. Like everything we’ve seen in Belgium so far, it’s got little narrow cobbled streets, and horse and carriage seems to be a prime way to see the town as tourists. At something like €26 for a ride, we opted out of this.

We did, however, choose to try Frite wit mayonnaise for lunch. (Fries, guys, fries...) and they were really very good. It was a rich and creamy mayonnaise, not like the sort we’re used to. Rhiannon is chucking a hissy fit that we can never get mayo like this at home. So we'll try (again) to make our own.

On our way back to the train station, we decided to just sit for a while, on the bank of a canal, in a lovely green strip of land. There were heaps of other people doing the same, so it’s obviously a popular pastime. If you’re walking to the town from the station, it will be on your right just after you cross the main road, you can’t miss it, and shouldn’t avoid it.

We’re both really liking Belgium so far. Alot of the houses we’ve seen while being on the trains seem very much like the sort of suburban houses we’d be used to. They wouldn’t look out of place in some areas of the US, or some areas of London, or even some areas of Australia. I think I could definitely live here. If I could speak the language :P
