It is 3:10am, or 2:10am, take your pick dependant on the time zone. We’ve just passed through another station, and neither of us are really sleeping. But it’s ok we’re awake because over to the south it’s relatively flat and there is an absolutely astounding lightning storm. We’ve never seen anything like it.
For starters, our lightning in general tends to be blue or white, and this is red and yellow lightning. Then we’ve got the entire sky is lit up with huge amounts of what Rhiannon calls Blanket Lightning. Not specific strikes of lightning, but just light. This is white and not yellow, but still fantastic to watch.
As well as the blanket lightning, there are massive long strikes of the yellow or red lightning, all the way from the sky down to the horizon. It surely must be hitting the ground. We’ve seen some lights go out, although we can’t guarantee that’s not just vagaries of landscape in between. It’s the time length of strikes that’s most amazing, some of them have been upwards of 5 seconds. And the blanket goes on above it the whole time.
It is without doubt definitely worth being awake for. Only another 10 hours till Graz :P At least we get back on a Railjet at 8:00am. First Class again... oh the joy !
