On our way into Graz, we’d already noticed the huge mountains, found ourselves looking down at verdant, green valleys with little villages, surrounded by the towering mountains, lots of low lying cloud, which the ever-present rain kept breaking through.
Today, between Graz and Salzburg, we’re finding ourselves more often down in the valleys, looking up at the huge mountains. Some of them are just rocky outcrops, they look like granite at the top. Would be awesome to see them with snow on them. Down beside us at one stage was a fast running stream, with a sort of aqua-green coloured water. Whether it refelects the green of the surrounding forests and grass, or it’s just the colour of melted snow water, we don’t know. It’s probably the wrong time of year for a snow-stream though.
Even more so than Koenigstein in Germany, this is outdoor territory that would be excellent for hiking and rockclimbing. Some areas would be great for downhill skiing, but cross country would be more the go here I suspect. We’ve considerd taking pictures to demonstrate what I’m talking about, but photos through train windows just never work very well.
