Of Trains and Journeys....

I've always wanted to do one of those magical long train journeys, like the Indian Pacific, or the Trans-Siberian. The massive, long trips that go for days on end where you cross miles of countryside, or even countries at a time.
As a slight nod to this, we chose to do an overnight train from Rome to Venice. We're buying a Eurail Pass for our next trip, so I'm sure there will be more of these things.

I suspect I have changed my mind on overnight trains somehow. I'm not sure if it was the two espresso shots I had a few hours earlier at Piazza Navona or the motion, or the noise, or the fact that it was overheated. But I did not enjoy it. Did not really sleep.
Dude, having coffee at Piazza Navona, Rome

At the other end of the journey, as we walked out of the station at about 5:30am, we were confronted with the wow-factor that is Venice, as the sun is starting to come up. It was a Saturday morning, and so clearly not very lively, even until almost 9:00am. But oh it was really, really wow. You walk out of the station, and there's just Canal in front of you. And a dome of some sort, and the sun coming up over to your left. Like nothing I'd ever seen before.

The streets, and canals, were like total mazes, and we walked in circles several times, trying to find the Rialto Bridge, and Piazza San Marco. Eventually we got there though, then found our way back to the station on a Vaporetto, collected our luggage and headed over to the Passenger Shipping Terminal, to jump onboard our cruise.

For the rest of the afternoon, we simply feasted on the variety of foods available, spent some time in the pool, and watched the world pass by from our balcony. After dinner in the main dining room, we collapsed.

Over the past 3 days or so, we'd done mammoth amounts of walking, and not necessarily huge amounts of sleeping (a total of no more than about 15-18 hours) so we were exhausted, and the beds in our stateroom are miraculous. Sure, they are zip-together bed but there's some sort of comforter on top, and you just sink into the bed. It's the best night's sleep we've had in a long time.
