Utrecht and Anne Frank

We had originally planned to go to Muidersloot on one of our days, but it seemed a bit of a hassle to get there, and only see a castle. Hassle vs reward and all that. So instead, we went to Utrecht on a whim.

It seems very much like a quieter, relaxed neighbour compared to the raucus sin-city image of Amsterdam. Almost like a university town in fact. Very very few cars we saw, and overall it was quiet. Still canals everywhere, that’s seeming to be a theme over here, we’re wondering if we’ll ever find somewhere that doesn’t have one (and I mean canal as opposed to river)

After that, we caught the train back, and joined the line for Anne Frank’s house. If you’re planning on going here, give yourself the time to stand in a line – it was almost 45 minutes for us, at about 5:30. The lines are meant to get shorter after 6pm. Overall, it wasn’t as dark, or as sad as I think I might have expected. It wasn’t just this tiny little attic, there was actually a fairly reasonable chunk of space over all. Maybe not so much when you consider 8 people hiding in there 24x7 and never able to go outside, or talk about a whisper. Does make me want to read the book and see the movie though.

Tonight is a simple late dinner down at Leidensplan again (we’ve found 3 or 4 restaurants doing €5 pizzas or pastas, which makes for a cheap meal!) then tomorrow, we’re leaving Amsterdam and heading eastward, to Cologne. Smell you later.... :P
