Weiner Schnitzel, Hefeweizen, Apfelwein, and Chocolate Popcorn.

Yes, you heard correctly. Chocolate Popcorn marked our first afternoon in Frankfurt. Closely followed by good, hearty German food, and of course, beer.

Our train ride from Cologne to Frankfurt took us through some lovely green forests - seeming to become infinite within a metre of the tracks, they were as black and deep as they were green. Totally gorgeous, and somewhat reminiscent of some of the rainforest above Apollo Bay.

Once we found our hotel, we went out for a wander, and found on the southern side of the Main river, some sort of carnivaly thing for kids - jumping castles and things like that, all free. Wandering along, we came across Chocolate Popcorn. Oh this is as evil as it sounds, but you simply can't stop. It's like caramel popcorn, only covered in slightly bitter chocolate, instead of salt, or sugar, or caramel. And it's all nice and warm and partly gooey, so bits stick together.

On Sundays in Germany, most things are closed, so we couldn't do much else apart from walk around and observe. IT really is a beautiful city - it has some of the tallest skyscrapers in the European Union, but the old town fits right in. It just all meshes well. On the southern side of the river, you can find Sachsenhausen, which has the old Apfelwein district - this is a reputed nightlife area, with all the old half-wooded houses - now all pubs. Charming little German pathways though, and an odd little fountain that spits water at you !

Just up past the Romer (town square) we found a little beerhaus/restaurant where we chose to sit and partake in a solid German tradition.. the drinking of beer, and of Apfelwein.

Apfelwein is a sort of uncarbonated apple cider. Roughly the same alcoholic content, but to my mind, not real great in taste. It's not sweet, but kind of tart. Not at all bitter. To compensate, I tried three different local beers, of which my favourite was a Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen hell. It's kind of surprising considering it's a wheat beer, and I've never liked those.

We ate at the same place - Schnitzels with a "Hot" paprika and corn sauce for me, and bacon, cheese and onion for Rhiannon. The onion had a sort of ghoulash-like sauce that soaked into the schnitzel, even after she took it off and gave it to me :P

After that, we strolled back home again, and realised that the red light district here is pretty nasty, and nothing like Amsterdam. Just full of dirty people. Kind of like St Kilda can be.

That's all for now....
